The ultimate 5-minute healthy Italian hoagie for summer lunches, beach days, and family road trips.
This is definitely the BEST Italian sandwich, perfect for a summer lunch on the beach or a healthy road trip hoagie for the family. It's the heartiest sandwich, and it has some honestly amazing macros for how non-diet it tastes.
It’s inspired by a sandwich shop my husband and I visited on Capri. An Italian boatman we had just taken a tour of the island with recommended this exact sandwich from a tiny little corner shop (Aldo's, I think was the name) tucked away near the water. We tried it and immediately understood why he insisted on it.
We were in heaven.

It had this salty, crispy baguette exterior, and it was packed with creamy mozzarella, juicy tomato, savory prosciutto, and Italian herbs with just a little olive oil brushed over the bread. Just divine. And once the mozzarella and tomato juices soaked into the bread a little? Forget it. The flavors just melted together so gorgeously.
I still dream about that sandwich.
But for now, my husband and I have to settle for a high-protein Capri copycat version.
And honestly? It absolutely delivers.
This healthy Italian sandwich is packed with protein while still tasting like an authentic Italian deli sandwich you’d grab on a European summer vacation. It’s perfect for meal prep lunches, quick high-protein dinners, beach picnics, road trips, or an easy family lunch that feels fresh and satisfying without being overly heavy.
And honestly? The bread choice really matters here.
Personally, I would rather have a slightly smaller sandwich with that perfect crisp baguette crunch and a few more carbs and calories than lose that authentic flavor. But you can just as easily substitute a lower-calorie or lower-carb bread option, depending on your goals.
Ingredients
Your choice of bread (either sourdough, authentic Italian bread, or the hoagie version of this 647 bread)
2 oz deli turkey
1 oz turkey pepperoni
1/2 tomato, sliced
Olive oil (I use this sprayer)
Salt
Fresh basil (optional)
Instructions (to create the BEST high-protein Italian sandwich)
Sorry, I just have to keep saying it. Because it is SO GOOD.
Brush the inside of both halves of the bread with a little olive oil and toast until lightly crisp.
Place the tomato slices on one half of the bread and the mozzarella on the other half so the juices soak into both sides of the sandwich while it rests.
Sprinkle Italian seasoning and a little salt over the mozzarella side.
Layer the deli turkey and turkey pepperoni in the middle and press the sandwich together gently.
You can absolutely eat this immediately, but honestly? Letting it rest for about 10 minutes is worth it. The tomato and mozzarella juices start to soak into the bread slightly, and everything melds together into that perfect, salty, creamy, savory bite.
This high protein italian sandwich tastes like summer vacation food in the best possible way.
